The whole purpose of Icebug Xperience Bohuslän is to show you that a race can be so much more than a race. In our world, a race is more than the blood, sweat and tears you produce between the start and finish line. Therefore, we invented a race that doesn’t end at the finish line. In fact, the finish line is just the start of something new. Welcome to Bohuslän.
It’s a diverse course, including everything from huge cliffs to narrow forest trails. The course follows the ocean and you will see old fisherman’s villages, heaths, canyons and a huge amount of red-colored granite rocks. Three stages – three different experiences.
Each course is marked with blue and yellow markers/stripes. There are distance signs every second kilometer. Water and energy drink stations will be located approximately every 5-6 km. At each drink station you will also find a toilet.
The first stage of Icebug Xperience West Coast Trail starts on the sea cliffs of Ramsvikslandet. On this stage you will run on the famous, slightly red-colored granite slabs for almost 8k, surrounded by the most stunning views Bohuslän has to offer. Everywhere are traces from the ancient ice sheet with giant kettles and ice slides.
When you’ve passed the cliff sections on the island of Ramsvik, you will run over a bridge back to the mainland. Once back on the mainland, you will run beautiful single tracks passing mountains and forests before you reach Kungshamn and Smögen. The finish takes place on the famous pier in Smögen. Here awaits today’s lunch and perhaps a refreshing swim in the ocean.
The stage contains approximately 404 meters vertical gain.
The second stage is the most diverse in this adventure and a stage that offers everything you can ask from a trail race. You run through enchanted deciduous forests and over rocks along the shore, as well as through a stunning old stonemasonry and small fishing villages.
This stage starts on Bohus-Malmön, a place with an interesting stonemasonry history, with reminders such as the old quarries and stone remnants. The coastal trail here takes us around the island and you will pass nice beaches with smooth granite slabs. After 11K at Bohus-Malmön, you arrive at the ferry station, where a ferry will take you back to the mainland while you enjoy some refreshments. During the ferry break, timekeeping will of course be stopped.
The second part of the stage starts at Tullboden on the main land. Here awaits a quite hilly track with a wide range of scenery. You will pass slippery rocks, verdant forests and winding gravel roads. After approx. 17 additional K, you will reach the finish line in Kungshamn, where you enjoy a delicious lunch before you let the shuttle busses take you back to your accommodation.
This day, hikers can choose to take a shorter route at Bohus-Malmön, which shorten the total distance of this day to 20 kilometers. The ones that choose the shorter route will be excluded from the result list.
The stage contains approximately 557 meters vertical gain.
The last stage starts in the picturesque port of Hunnebostrand and the participants will then pass through the village and a unique stone sculpture park. The trail then goes on into the hilly terrain around Hunnebostrand. Enjoy a varied landscape where the hill peaks provide a magnificent view of the archipelago. You will pass lovely deciduous forests as well as the magnificent, hand-dug Sote Channel. After approximately 15K, you will pass a bridge back to Ramsvik. Notice that this bridge may be opened for boat traffic. In case the bridge is open, your additional time will be substracted from your total time.
The last kilometers are located at Ramsvikslandet, a nature reserve also called “The rocks kingdom”. Here are vast areas of granite rock but also heathlands and meadows. The course ends with some of the fastest and funniest trails you can find, before you reach the finish line on the beach at our race hub at Ramsvik Holiday Village on the north side of Ramsvikslandet. Here awaits a well-deserved medal and a sauna by the sea. Of course, you’ll also get a lunch to enjoy while you’re sharing memories from the weekend with your new friends.
The stage contains approximately 430 vertical meters.
